abstract = {Processes, containers, and virtual machines (VMs) offer different trade-offs between performance, isolation, and resource sharing. Yet, they represent just three points in a vast design space. Developers repeatedly introduce ad-hoc isolation mechanisms to tune these trade-offs for specific deployments, but there is no systematic way to explore the design space and derive mechanisms that satisfy given security and performance goals. We introduce IsoSearch, a technique for exploring the isolation mechanism design space to find one that satisfies the goals and constraints of a specific deployment scenario. IsoSearch builds on OSmosis [4], our prior model of isolation, which represents protection domains, resources, and their relationships as a graph. A developer begins with a starting mechanism and its representation as an OSmosis graph and specifies both a set of functional constraints (e.g., these two protection domains must both be able to write to this file) and an optimization target (e.g., minimize the amount of memory shared between the two domains). IsoSearch then navigates the design space by applying valid graph transitions to generate candidate mechanisms, scores each mechanism, and selects the most promising ones for further exploration. The search terminates when all active candidates satisfy the constraints and goals or when score improvement plateaus. We demonstrate the efficacy of our approach through five case studies, ranging from resource privatization to protecting a database's private key.},
