Why doing research during your undergraduate degree?

During your undergraduate degree at UBC, you learn a lot in your classes about theory of computing, computer architectures, systems programming, software engineering, machine learning, etc. Doing a research project you can apply what you have learned in different contexts and work on an open-ended problem that has no clear answer -- otherwise it wouldn't be research.

Getting research experience during your undergraduate degree is also a great way to demonstrate that you know what research is and that you are capable of doing research. This is particularly important when you are thinking about applying to a graduate school.

Finally, I can write you a much stronger letter of recommendation if you have worked with me on a research project. I can comment on your technical skills, how you approached and solved the problem, etc. This is much more valuable than a letter that simply says you got an A in my class.

Directed Studies (CPSC 448)

This is typically a 3 or 6 credit course over one or two terms where you work on a research project. There is quite some flexibility on what you can do, in particular also regarding deliverables.

Honor's Thesis (CPSC 449)

If you are in the honor's program in Computer Science, you will do an Honor's Thesis in your final year. This is typically a two term project, where you work on a research project and then write a thesis document.

Summer Research Internships

There are plenty of research opportunities in the summer and usually they are paid. Some of them come with awards.

Interested?

If you are interested in working with me, please send me an e-mail with the following information: * What are you interested in (Directed studies, Honor's Thesis, Summer Research Internship)? * What you like to work on. (This should overlap with things that I do.) * What is your background (courses you have taken, projects you have worked on). * Write from your official UBC e-mail address.

I try to reply within a few days. Note, there are deadlines for all of the research opportunities.

Deadlines

Specifically, for the Honor's Thesis and the Directed Studies, you will write a small proposal of the project as the first task. Of course I'll help you doing this, but I want this to be done before the term starts.
